My Discovery in Aquaponics

Sometime early in year 2013, I somehow bump into aquaponics when browsing the internet and was actually fascinated by the whole idea of a "free food machine" by harnessing what nature provides albeit abundantly.

The climax of my search can be sum up with this TED talk.

I will attempt to document my journey and experiences in making this "free food machine" a reality. A friend has supplied me with a 3' glass aquarium some time back and only today I've just sat down to draft how I could start this as economical as possible. After doing some further research and findings including discovering what I have that could be used.

This is the draft that I finally do to start the ball rolling

I am now starting to make it happen by gathering the parts that I need.
1. Fish Tank(FT) 520mm(L) x 370mm(W) x 280mm(H) - available
2. Glass Aquarium to as Sump Tank(ST) - gift from friend
3. Some material (bricks or wood planks) to elevate the FT a little - to find
4. A table to hold the Growth Bed(GB) over the FT - to find (mudah.my has RM20)
5. GB 390mm(L) x 280mm(W) x 140mm(H) - IKEA RM14.90 or find other?
6. Growth Medium Hydroton 1 bag - get river pebbles from TTDI park?
7. Pump rate min 200l/hr - to buy RM25-RM50?
8. Pet bottles for siphon - to find
9. PVC coupling for holes in the GB for siphon and FT to ST - to buy
10. Hose or tube from pump to GB - available
11. Tool bits to drill holes - to borrow?
12. Aerator pump to run at night to reduce noise - to buy (mudah.my RM10)?
13. Fish fry 10-12 - to buy?
14. Extension cord - available

Total budget under RM200...

I intend to locate the set up in our Rose Apartment, Taman Mayang PJ unit as it is located in the ground floor corner unit and has a bit more space and sun. Hopefully my tenant there would be receptive to my project which I intend to start in year 2014.

Wish me luck!
